Hahn's Peak
Every year for my birthday I go camping. It's a fairly new tradition but with this being my fourth trip in as many years I think it'll stick. This year the family and I had to avoid the unseasonably wet weather and flash flood warnings that seemed to blanket the entire state. The only area seemingly immune from the weather gods was up north near Steamboat Springs. We found Steamboat Lake State Park on the map and headed 3.5 hours northwest in hopes there'd be an available campsite. The good news was there were campsites available. The bad news was we had brought the weather with us. After getting drenched pitching camp we settled into the tent to see what trails might be close by. We found Hahn's Peak in our Colorado hiking book and decided to have a go. We decided to get an early start the next but having two younger children prevents these sorts of things so after breakfast and snacks and potty stops, we headed to the trailhead. Route County Road 129 was right off the campsite so we drove northwest into the small town of Columbine. We missed our right hand turn on Road 490 but backtracked and eventually found it (it's just a 490 on a very small post). The road is rough but doesn't require four wheel drive. If your car has low clearance I would definitely take it slowly. After about 1.5 miles you'll reach a meadow with the Hahn's Peak trailhead sign to your left. The trail climbs steeply from the trailhead on a service road.
